Weekly Cuusoo

Get your Build in the Lego Movie

Rebrick is having a little video competition.  If you win, you get a chance to have your build in the Lego Movie (and a trip and a few other things).

The idea is a fun one too.  You basically start your short video with one Lego build and at least one minifig.  Then the Minifig, upon hearing the call to adventure, breaks down the build and creates just the thing...for ADVENTURE!  In no more than 30 seconds though.

So...something like this:

Your build does not need to be your own MOC; the start, finish, or both can be official Lego builds or your own creations, but they can't be based on IP not owned by Lego...so Ninjago Good, Star Wars Bad.  Also, they are looking for traditional Lego minifigs, so no Friends figures, the rules don't specifically say you can't but I asked out of curiosity.

The more specific instructions, rules, and regulations can be found here.

I got a few ideas myself but getting it done in 30 seconds is no small feat!

What is Rebrick?

Even some of the people crazy enough about Lego to be reading this don't know what Rebrick is.  Whereas Cuusoo is the Lego Kickstarter meets Mocpages, Rebrick is the Lego Reddit by way of Pintrest...or is that the other way around...

Basically anyone can go to Rebirck and "bookmark" as site.  When you bookmark the site, Rebrick will scan the page for all its images.  You can then select one of the images and then catalog it with a category,  tags, and a gallery.  When you complete the process you have a bookmark like this one right here.  (This is the Pintrest part.)

The site then catalogs these images as you described and then ranks them according to likes and views.  (This is the Reddit part)

You can post anyones Lego, the bookmark goes back to the site of origin so there is no plagiarism.  Like Reddit you are posting for the shear love of sharing Lego builds you find on the internet.

These builds there are also not as limited in subject matter as those on Cuusoo.  Sure, profane stuff is taken down but as these are just links to images, instead of product concepts, there is a lot more leniency on what you can find there.

For those of you just posting to Cuusoo to "get your stuff seen,"  Rebrick is really a much more appropriate venue for you.

Recused from the Pick

Ok, so I know that many of you will call me silly for this but I am going to go ahead and not include my Discworld build in selections for pick of the week.

I can honestly say that any decent Discworld set would have a very high chance of being my pick of the week, just from my love of Terry Pratchett novels alone, but I feel absurd evaluting my own project.

So Instead I will say this:

The Discworld (or a sea turtle, some tiny elephants, and a blue pizza)

Here is my Discworld project.  I hope you like it.  Please check it out.

Pick of the Week

Emotions: Japan
by Bigboy99899

I am absolutely in love with this project.  Bigboy99899 came on the stage of Cuusoo last week and they have been putting up a consistent stream of quality projects but this is, in my opinion, the best.

The set is a combination of very angular  rigid structures, very much like Lego, juxtaposed with the chaotic and organic cherry blossom trees which have been pulled off artfully with a clever combination of hinged elements, tiles, and flowers.

The effect is enhanced greatly by the ground elements which are somewhere in-between.  The walk way is very linear with patterns of rectangular and rounded tile but the "stones" that make it up are not uniform in color.  Meanwhile the sand is totally uniform in color, broken up by intriguing shaped "rocks" that are surrounded by patterned sand.  This build is completed with a pond (hiding in the very back of the title image) that continues the perfected broken pattern of the piece.

This is not just my pick of the week, but one of my favorite builds that has graced Cuusoo.

Honorable Mentions

LEGO Architecture - BBC Television Centre
by Dansquier

Support Level: 33

This gets points for originality and well, just being a cool building.  I am a sucker for projects that curve Lego.  This makes me curious as to whether Character Builder has a licenses for all BBC products or just Doctor Who.

This picture demonstrates the accuracy with which Dansquier has recreated the very dynamic structure.

Ancient Wonder: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

So much going on but it all fits together so very well!  Very impressive stunt to pull off.

Ancient Wonder: The Temple of Artemis
by Bigboy99899

Support Level: 62

Like I said before, Bigboy99899 is coming to Cuusoo in a strong way.  I love all of these Ancient Wonders they have produced.

Origami Crane 折り鶴
by Bricksben

Support Level: 20

I have been a fan of origami all my life.  This is a really fun take on it.  Bricksben appears to be another new and rising star on Cuusoo.   If you missed their typewriter, make sure you give it a second look (here).

Vintage cars are, in my opinions, an untapped goldmine for Lego.  This is a perfect scale for it too.

Notables

General Hospital
by Mmcclelland

Support Level: 36

For some reason a hospital modular makes me uncomfortable.  The idea of a hospital sharing a wall with a cinema I guess...but the medical content in the build is rather clever.

Exposed Lightsabers Replica Series
by Darthnguyen

Support Level: 56

While I can appreciate the extensive work that has gone on in this project, I don't see it offering much more than the existing project that is 25% of the way to review.  It certainly showcases more variations, and has a sliding open action but I don't see that as a significant draw.  That being said, If you want a Lego lightsaber then vote for every one of them.

This could use a bit of work but it looks like a fun subject for Lego architecture.

Operation Steam Knights: Lady Kay
by Pittstop

Support Level: 14

This might be my favorite Steam Knight from Pittstop.

-Detective Conan-
by Marvel-boy

Support Level: 13

It is my understanding that Detective Conan is very popular in Japan.  I know the localized version did not do well in the U.S. but I enjoyed it while it was available.  I am a bit doubtful that Lego would consider producing a set based on a series where someone gets murdered in every story, but then again, the Japanese government has used Detective Conan in public awareness campaigns...so you never know.  All that being said, I think the vehicle in this project is quite attractive.  Marvel-boy is really burying the lead with this one, I am certain they would get more than 13 support with a project based just on the car.  Fewer licensing / brand fit issues too!

I don't usually go for the extreme variations on established Licensees, but this one brought a smile to my face...now that Disney owns both...who knows?

Polish City Bus
by Mwawrowski

Support Level: 114

Like Mwawrowski offering last week, I just don't see the potential of this set for Cuusoo,  at least not relative to its current support level.  At its core though, this is what Cuusoo is really about.  If 10,000 people sign up for a tiny bus, then Lego will design a version and evaluate it for production

Now, I do love tiny vehicles, like the Tiny Trucks project.  Based on the scale of this project though and the common nature of the parts, I would recommend this set more for an event kit.
